New cabinets for a great new look

Considering updates to your home?  The first item you should focus on is the cabinetry.  A kitchen makeover is the number one upgrade industry professionals recommend.  Besides an awesome look, new cabinets can greatly increase the value of your home.

The kitchen is also the most used room in the house so, updating it just makes sense.

A more functional kitchen can provide better storage space options and modifications to allow for new appliances.

In addition to an open concept, one of the most beneficial changes that can be made in a kitchen is the cabinets.

Since the cost to install new cabinets is 30% – 50% of a kitchen remodeling budget, it is important to spend wisely.

All wood cabinets VS solid wood cabinets

Two options you may have difficulty deciding between include all wood cabinets and solid wood cabinets. These days, cabinet manufacturers really do not offer solid wood cabinets.

This is primarily due to two reasons:

  1. Using solid wood is the least Eco-friendly approach to cabinet construction.
  2. There are a number of issues that can occur with solid wood.

One of the biggest complaints homeowners have with solid wood cabinets is a blotchy looking finish.  This happens often as their is really no way to control the way wood takes stain.  Professional finishers can still provide beautiful results.  However, admittedly, using solid wood will require more finishing labor to counteract the nature of the sold wood.  Since time is money, this will increase the cost of solid wood options.

Another issues with solid wood is that it has an adverse reaction to the weather, season, moisture in the air, temperature changes within the home, and the natural humidity.  This leads to defects in the finished product and overall look of the installation as it causes expanding and contracting in the wood.  As a result, warping and cracking issues can arise, which means repair work can cause your investment to balloon down the road.

These drawbacks are the reason why the majority of professionals agree that solid wood has it’s place in building cabinets, but using a man-made substrate and all wood veneer is the way to go as these types of materials were engineered to not have these types of problems.  When it comes to solid wood there are hardly any benefits that would justify the higher cost.

Laminate cabinets

Laminate or decorative laminate veneer (DVL) cabinets are comprised entirely of synthetic materials and can consist of finishes that allow it to appear similar to natural wood.  This product can come in many different looks and styles, which may appeal to many consumers.  As with every product on the market, there are pros and cons that must be considered.   Vinyl, 3D laminate cabinets are non-porous and that makes them very easy to clean.  Due to the nature of their construction, the color of these cabinets are very consistent and they are relatively inexpensive.

As for the cons, this product can be heat sensitive which can cause it to peal.  Another potential problem is that, if not applied properly, the finish may begin crack, so it is crucial that you hire a professional to install your cabinets.  The good news is that if we are installing this product for you, we have ways to keep issues from occurring.  If you want a lower cost option and a modern look, laminate may be just what you’re looking for.

Veneer cabinets

Plywood veneer is an all wood material that consists of at least two layers of wood, including a solid wood layer. The top layer of veneer is typically very thin and is bonded to the other layers in order to create a durable and long-lasting finish. While solid wood is prone to a wide range of issues, all wood veneers do not have those types of problems.

Solid wood usually warps as its moisture content changes, leading to an array of defects and a low-quality look as the cabinets begin to age.  This is not the case with plywood. Outer layers that have been beautifully finished wrap a man-made core layer within the veneer which adds to the longevity of the cabinets.

Due to the process of constructing veneers, it is physically impossible for them to become defective in the same way as solid wood.  Another primary benefit of veneer is that almost no wood is wasted as it is being cut from the log.  This makes the veneered option the greenest ways to go.

Custom cabinets VS big box store

Simply put, custom cabinets are better when compared to big box store and ready-to-assemble (RTA) cabinets in every way.  Although, we will install anything you would prefer, we have to say that big box store and RTA cabinets are sub-par.  This is primarily due to the fact that they are not constructed to the highest level of standards and “off-the-shelf” means they were not designed to match the specifications of your home in any way, so fitting them into the proper space can be surprisingly difficult.

Quality Cabinet Making

Big box stores (i.e. Home Depot, Lowes, Ikea, and Cabinet Retailers) tend to get their cabinets from large, overseas manufacturers who simply cannot provide the quality that is delivered from custom cabinet makers and American-made products crafted by local manufactures.

These companies opt for overseas manufacturers to get their purchase price down.  However, they are not passing the cost savings onto homeowners.

They add their profit markup to these inexpensive, poorly constructed, products and sell them to the public.

This means you are getting an inferior product for a price you would expect to pay for a quality piece.

By choosing a local builder, you have the assurance that you will be provided the service that our large big-box competitors lack and your cabinets will perfectly match your taste and decor.

Custom cabinets provide a higher quality product and superior functionality.  Get better built, longer lasting, beautiful cabinets for only 10% – 15% more.  It is worth the added investment as these cabinets typically last three times longer than their big-box counterparts.
