Popular Countertop Options
Granite, $50-100 per square foot
Granite is, by far, the most popular and traditional countertop choice. It is available in dark and light colors, is incredibly strong so it won’t scratch easily, and it can withstand heat. However, granite is porous, so it will absorb stains, especially lighter colored granite. Spills should be wiped up immediately, and you should have your granite sealed once per year to help avoid stains.
Soapstone, $75-125 per square foot
This is the perfect countertop for someone who loves dark granite but enjoys the natural veining of marble countertops. Soapstone is soft, which can make it susceptible to scratches and dents, but these can be sanded out. The benefits of soapstone though, besides its look, are that it is non-porous so it won’t absorb stains and can handle a lot of heat.
Butcher Block, $30-200 per square foot
Butcher block is made from slabs of wood that are glued together to create a thick, sturdy, and smooth surface. These countertops require a lot of maintenance, so consider that before you add them to your kitchen remodel. These counters require monthly oiling and yearly sanding and sealing so it doesn’t grow bacteria. These counters also occasionally grow mold if there is sitting water, and can be scorched by hot pans. This is called butcher block, so it might not come as a surprise that you can chop meats and vegetables directly on the counter – but this will add nicks and scratches, so understand what you want your counter to look like before you start chopping.
Concrete, $60-130 per square foot
Concrete counters are cool, industrial, and modern. They can withstand heat and won’t scratch. However, they do require yearly sealing to prevent stains. The concrete must be poured and cured during installation, and attention to detail is a must for a nice finish. Because of that, concrete counters are some of the most expensive to install.
